A new survey from Acast offers fresh evidence of why a podcast ad campaign could be the solution to a more cash-strapped consumer in 2023. It finds 95% of U.S. podcast listeners have taken some action as a result of podcast advertising. That figure is even higher among frequent listeners even as the universe of podcast fans expands. In that group, 97% said they had bought a product or researched a brand. The research also shows a closing gap between host-read and recorded ads. Google is alerting podcasters to expect a drop in clicks and impressions as it makes changes to Google Search. Starting February 13, the company says Google Search will stop showing podcast carousels. “As a result, clicks and impressions in ‘how people find your show’ will drop to zero after that date,” it says in a notice in the Google Podcast Manager. It also suggests that podcasters may want to consider downloading any historical data that they want to keep for future use before then. The unionization move across podcasting has arrived at the progressive podcast studio Crooked Media. The Writers Guild of America, East says an “overwhelming majority” of the 55-member bargaining unit at Crooked Media signed cards to unionize with them for the purpose of collective bargaining. The Crooked Media Workers Union is looking for improved pay, greater clarification on promotion requirements and job descriptions, and more inclusivity in hiring practices. The Vox Media Podcast Network could be primed for more growth as Penske Media has struck a deal to become Vox Media’s largest shareholder. Vox, the home of brands including The Verge, Eater, SB Nature and New York magazine, will continue to operate independently of Penske and its portfolio of publications. Financial terms of the deal were not released but reports suggest Penske will pump $100 million into Vox.  Read morePenske Media Buys Big Stake In Vox Media With A Joint Focus On Growth.

Spotify has created podcasts in English and Spanish. It has also translated English-language shows into Spanish and vice versa. Now it is trying something new – it is releasing a podcast that features both languages in the same show. The new series La Cabina Telefónica – or telephone booth -- highlights the Latino immigrant experience of the 1990s. The 2023 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Awards were announced Monday night and first-time nominees Gimlet Media and Audible walked away winners, as did This American Life. Gimlet’s Stolen series was honored for its “Surviving St. Michael’s” season and Audible was honored for the Kevin Hart-Charlamagne Tha God-produced series Finding Tamika. The awards honor outstanding public service audio and video reporting and were selected by a jury of journalists. There is more evidence of the post-holiday rebound returning to podcasting last month. Podtrac says among the publishers it measures January audience and downloads not only increased from the seasonal December dip, but grew beyond the levels seen a year ago. Podtrac reports the average top 20 publisher had a seven percent month-over-month increase in its U.S. unique monthly audience during January. Powered by a 24% jump in its unique monthly audience and a 22% increase in downloads last month, This American Life podcast was one of the big winners in January as podcast listening picked back up. It rode the wave to advance three spots and enter the top ten. But it was Yardvark’s This Past Weekend that was the biggest winner for the month as it entered the top 20 for the first time. Dawn Ostroff, the former Chief Content and Advertising Business Officer at Spotify, will receive nine months’ worth of her $1 million per year salary as part of her exit package from the company. A filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission says CEO Daniel Ek remains the lowest-paid executive at Spotify. And it details how much was spent last year on the AI platform Sonantic and the audiobook company Findaway. The mini-musical podcast Bite-Sized Broadway is accepting second season submissions of new mini-musical works to be featured on the podcast beginning today (Feb. 6) through Sunday, March 5, 2023. Productions that are selected will premiere on the podcast this fall. Whether it’s the bakery or the produce department, there is a lot to be said about freshness. The same holds true for podcasts apparently, as an analysis of what some of the top-ranking shows have in common reveals. Rephonic crunched the data and it found that newer shows generally do better. When YouTube updated its advertising guidelines in November the company immediately found itself on the receiving end of criticism, especially from the gaming community. What sparked the pushback were changes to its content guidelines for what YouTube refers to as “inappropriate” language” that would put ad dollars at risk for any producer – including podcasters – that crossed the line. Adnan Syed, the convicted murderer whose conviction was cast into doubt on the first season of the Serial podcast, may not yet be out of legal jeopardy. The family of Hae Min Lee, the woman who a jury concluded was murdered by Syed in 1999, has asked the Appellate Court of Maryland to reinstate the conviction. SoundCloud and Pandora have renewed their ad sales agreement that was first formed in 2019. SXM Media, the combined sales group of SiriusXM and Pandora, will continue to serve as the exclusive advertising representative for SoundCloud into 2024.
